Getting to Know Yourself Better

It's inevitable, it happens to everyone. From time to time we all get a little sad. And that's normal. It's completely normal to feel sad, angry, pissed off or scared. But it's also normal to feel positive emotions, like happiness, excitement and joy and we have a right to these positive emotions.

I feel like a lot of the time when I get upset, I just really need to get in touch with myself. As corny as that sounds, it's true. I may be mad at someone for being disrespectful or maybe I'm stressed about an unfortunate event. In the end it's me who's dealing these emotions and it's up to me to get better.

I feel like the better I know myself, the better I can cheer myself up.
The better I know myself, the better I can predict these negative emotions and prevent them.
The better I know myself, the better I can cope.

So I think we should all get to know ourselves a little better, or a lot better. It's really important to know what we like, what we don't like, what we want, what we don't want and what we need and don't need. It can be fun getting to know yourself. It's like hanging out with your best friend who knows you better than anyone else. And you don't have to feel guilty about talking about you and your problems the entire time.

So without further ado, here are some fun activities for you and yourself!
They're designed so that you get to know yourself a little better, but are also just for fun!
They're divided into different four categories: draw, write, think and do. Of course feel free to write out the activities under "draw", think about things under "write", etc. if that's what floats your boat!

  • Draw a picture of yourself (including all your beautiful flaws. Flaws are what make you YOU. Because of your flaws, no one's exactly quite like you. You are 100% unique and I think that's pretty fantastic)
  • Connect with your inner child and draw your ideal home. Don't think about logic or any of that nonsense. Is your home somewhere where it always snows? Is it on the beach? Made out of candy? In the middle of a mall?

  • List your top 10 favourite activities to do by yourself
  • Describe a childhood summer memory
  • list 30 (yes, thirty) things you like about yourself
  • What is your favourite season and why

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • What is your ideal job?
  • Do you see yourself retiring, or working for as along as you can? If you think you'll retire, where? And if you think you're going to be working, where?

  • Go for a walk by yourself, at least 20 minutes
  • Make yourself a fancy meal (perhaps use gourmet items, or do a 3 course meal)
  • Indulge yourself by watching your favourite childhood movie

Pretty pool water nail design

This nail design was inspired by pretty pool water. Like when it's all reflecty and pretty and has swirly lines on it, you know? If not then just pretend I was inspired by water, and just water :P

First start off with white nails

Then get a makeup sponge. I like to get off the pointy bits to get a round (ish) edge

Then dip the corner of the sponge with a bit of any blue/green/teal/turquoise/mint/pool-water colour you have

Then dab it into your nails. This is where it's kind of tricky. You don't want to cover all your nail with the pool-water colour, you want to leave some bits white. But you also don't want to have a smooth gradual colour change. You want it a bit chunky, but not too chunky. So some parts white, some parts light pool-colour and have some parts dark pool-colour. But you want these different shades to blend. It's sounds complicated, but it's not really

Then using a white striper, draw squiggly lines. Try to have some lines thick, some thin, some opaque and some somewhat translucent (do as I say, not as I do)

Add a top coat and sparkly coat if desired. This will really help the colours blend and make it look much much better!

Then there you have it! Pretty pool water inspired nails :)

Green Tea Latte!

Okay so, only somewhat recently I discovered the magic of matcha powder. It all started with the green tea frappe, then the smoothies, then the iced lattes, etc. Matcha powder is the best. It tastes delicious (except some people may think it tastes like dirty grass, like my mother) and it gives me energy without it making me feel all jittery and shaky and sweaty and weird (like coffee does to me). Plus tons of other health benefits that I'm not too sure of, so you can look dat uppp.

Anyways, here is how I (huge emphasis on I) make my green tea lattes.

  • Matcha powder (tea stores or Asian grocery stores in the tea aisle)
  • Vanilla
  • sweetener
  • cinnamon
  • Milk

First mix the first four ingredients in a little bowly

Then grab your super cute teeny tiny thought-it-was-useless-until-I-started-making-green-tea-lattes whisk ...or fork

Add hot water (not boiling, but quite warm) and mixy!

Then warm up your milk and add the Matcha powder mixture to the warm milk

Stir and enjoy! :P

Dear lovelies, what's your favourite weekend morning drink?

Yummy Drink/pudding thing!

First of all... Chia seeds! If you don't know what they are, do a bit of research, I'll wait :)

Kay you done now? Know all about chia seeds? Awesome!

So! I just discovered this delectable yummy yummy drink! Well if you use a lot of milk it could be a drink with bits in it, but if you don't add that much milk then it would be more like a pudding. It's creamy, it's sweet, it's chocolatey.... It is/can be dairy free and loaded with lots of good-for-you stuff (thanks to the chia seeds)!

Okay, lets get started!

You need:
chia seeds (can be found at most grocery stores, I got mine at Save on Foods)
warmish cream/milk (I used soy creamer)
cinnamon (if that's how you role)
cocoa powder
sweetener (I used honey, but you can use mashed up banana too! Or good ol' sugar or even Maple syrup)

First mix the chia seeds, milk, cinnamon and cocoa powder. Start off with a spoonful of chia seeds and about a cup of milk to start for your chia seed to liquid ratio. Then mix every minute or so and the chia seeds with get a gelatin-y later around them. Then you can see if you want to add more milk or not (more milk makes it more liquidy). Then add the sweetener until it is sweet enough for your likings! Voila! Delish!

Hair Cut!

Here's a story of how my hair works. Mostly, what you need to know is that my hair grows fast, incredibly fast. Okay. You may read on now.

First I get it cut short, real short. Like showing my ears short and I usually love it. But after a week or two it grows out a wee bit and I start to love it even more. Then a couple weeks later it gets a  bit longer, gets more feminine it makes for a whole new look, but I still love it. But then it grows a little too long and I start to not like it. Then it grows more, my bags get in my face and it is no longer a style, more like a mop. Then after it completely drives me crazy, I get it cut again! Then this repeats over and over and over.

This whole process occurs in as little as a few months.
The reason why I let it grow out so much that it drives me bonkers, is because if I didn't, I'd be getting my hair cut every month!

The last few times I got my hair cut, I got it cut too long so it grew out way too fast. This time I refused to make that mistake! So this time I got it cut nice and short :)

Here is the before:

And here is the after!

What do you guys think?
Would you ever cut your hair this short?

Valentine's Day

Hello there! I hope everyone had a fantastic Valentine's day yesterday! I know I sure did :) Although it did consist of numerous failed attempts at making breadsticks with pizza sauce (the yeast mixture would not froth!) and over cooked cookies, I still got to spend it with my love :) Also he got me playing video games (something that I simply do not too) and we watched our favourite T.V. shows that come on Thursday night! All in all, a swell day. How your Valentine's Day? Spent it with the love, friends, family, a box of chocolate, the T.V., a bottle of wine? Let me know!

My time in Prince George!

For my first year of university I decided to travel north to Prince George and go to the beautiful university of northern B.C. I was away from home for the first time, living with complete strangers, doing long-distance with my boyfriend and all that jazz. Let me tell you, I had a blast. Yes it was hard, and there were times that just completely sucked. But I made a lot of friends, learned a lot and just matured sooo much. Okay, here are some pics!

My beautiful campus!

View from my living room!

Joined the cheerleading team! (That's me in the front right with black shorts)

And got many a bruises

Made lots of fancy ish food!

And some not so fancy food. (It's chicken nuggets in the shape of dinosaurs stacked on top of each other on toilet paper - no napkins)

First time I made fried rice! Turned out so yummy. I remember texting my sister being like "I made fried rice! Like real life fried rice!" I was so proud of myself.

I was feeling home sick so I made my favourite thing my mom makes. Tomato soup with corn cakes!

Fancy, huh? ;)

Halloween! Our school put on Rocky Horror Picture Show so we dressed up!

Dolphin Nanner! :D
Hedley concert with roomie and managed to get on the meet and greet list! So lucky
End of the year dance
And finally, move out day!

And that's my time at UNBC, in a nutshell.

Info about me

When I follow other blogs, I like to get to the know the person. Know who they are, what they've done and what they're up to. It's nice. It's like I know them personally. Then I can get all excited for them, do some BIRGing (basking in reflective glory - thank-you social psych) and it's fun! Like I made a new friend :) So I thought I'd share a bit of information with you! So let's get started, shall we?

First of all, my name is Nicola. Pronounced Nik-euh-lah. Or Nik-uh-lah. Somewhere in between. Maybe more like the latter. I'm 19 going on 20. I currently live in Vancouver B.C. living with ma folks in my childhood home. I've been living here my whole life except for 8 months while I was away for school.

For school I was living in Prince George. It was the September after high school that I left for my journey away from home. I decided on Prince george to attend the University of Northern B.C. It seemed like a good fit for me. It was small, but still a university. It was far, but not too far away from home (11 ish hour greyhound ride). It snowed there a lot. The campus looked beautiful. And it was very nature-y (trails on campus or hikes!). Although I had never really been to PG before and didn't know anyone there, I was still really excited to go. I was there from September 2011 to April 2012 completing 2 semesters. It was some good times! I'll make a post dedicated to that trip later on.

I have two older sisters, both in their twenties. I am super close with both of them and am lucky to have them as big sisters! I live with my dad and step mom and will occasionally spend the night at my mom's. Also super close with my mommy :)

I'm majoring in psychology and hopefully will become a counsellor at a high school. I would also love to put on workshops for teens and make cute little brochures like Emma from Glee. Also I would want to be the person in charge of "The Girls Club" at the school. That's the dream. Well as of right now. I also for sure want to be like one of them pro bloggers; also the dream. Also I would love to own my own etsy page and sell some of my art.

Segway.... my art! I love painting, drawing, sketching, doodling, crafts.. A bunch of different things. I do it mainly because I love to. It's great way to use my energy and creativity. It's how I get what's going through my head, outside into something physical. It's also a great stress reliever for me. Crafts make me happy and it's something fun to do :) If I could, I'd craft, cook and bake all day!

Right now I'm dating this fabulous guy, Mannfred. We've been dating for just over 20 months and are going strong! While I was at UNBC he was at UVIC (8 hour drive and a ferry ride away). Doing long distance sucked, but we made it through and as a result, got much much closer!

That's all that I can think of as of right now. If there's something else I feel like saying about myself, I will! If you've gotten this far, I thank-you!

Red velvet strawberry cheesecake hot cocoa!

Yes, you read that right. Red velvet strawberry cheesecake hot cocoa!  Now if you're the kind of person who is sick and tired of all those "soy, non-fat, extra espresso, no foam" kind of drinks or a bajillion flavours in one, I get you. I know this drink has a bajillion flavours in it, but it's not really thhaattt many. It doesn't taste super complex and weird. To me, it tastes like red Smarties! Super yum. Anyway, if you want to make this delicious drink, follow these simple directions.

  • Milk
  • Chocolate chips
  • Strawberry cream cheese
  • Sugar
  • vanilla (optional)
  • Red food colouring

Heat up milk and cream on the stove. Add chocolate chips and strawberry cream cheese (and vanilla if using) and stir until melted.

Add red food colouring (looks creepy huh?) and mix

Pour into a clear mug and enjoy!

This recipe is based on this one here. The only change I made was the strawberry cream cheese.
Credit goes to the lovelies at A Beautiful Mess, if you haven't already, check out that blog!

I really really liked this drink. I shared it with my sister and she liked it so much that she made some more! I hope you try it out and like it as much as my sister and I did!

Valentine's day garland!

Yet another Valentine's day themed post! I've been meaning to make garland for the longest time and my mom has a bunch of paper punches that I've been meaning to use. But I finally got my hands on her heart shaped paper punch. So I made fluttery heart garland :)

I used Cue cards, heart paper punch, pink string and a needle

First make a whole bunch of heart shaped pieces of thick paper

Then cut a slit from the bottom of the heart in the middle going aproximately half way up

Then take another heart and cut it down the middle from the top, again, approximately half way down

Then simply slide the two together

Repeat! You can also add little pieces of tape to secure them in place

Next, with a needle and string, polk through all the hearts, spacing them out evenly

Ta-day! Heart garland :)

Valentine's Gift

Homemade gifts are the best gifts! They're personal, sweet, show that you care and can pretty damn cheap! So here is one simple present I decided to make for love. It's kind of inspired by all of those "52 reasons why I love you" projects that people use cards. Also inspired by kissy lips.

Here's my second nail design, got it from here. Super cute and simple! You use tape as stencil. They were supposed to all ombre-y, but didn't really turn out like that :P Oh well, I still like it! I also added star stickers to my ring fingers, but you also can't really tell that either. And then I finished with a sparkle top coat.
